What is CDR?<\/strong>
\nIn the series \u201cTHE INTERPRETER – The scientific dictionary\u201d by the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universit\u00e4t Munich, Dr. Felix Havermann discusses the role of Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) in combating climate change.<\/p>\n

CDR refers to processes that actively remove CO\u2082 from the atmosphere \u2013 going beyond mere emission reductions. Natural methods use biological processes such as reforestation or soil-friendly agricultural practices to sequester carbon over the long term. Technical approaches like \u201cDirect Air Capture and Storage\u201d (DACCS), on the other hand, remove CO\u2082 from the air using engineered systems.<\/p>\n

The development of CDR<\/strong>
\nHavermann explains how the concept of CO\u2082 removal first emerged in climate policy in the 1990s, which methods are available today, and what potential CDR holds for the future. However, he also emphasizes that CDR alone is not sufficient to stop climate change \u2013 it requires fundamental changes in our lifestyles and economic systems.<\/p>\n
