CDR Dialog 2023
Discussing CO₂ removal with science, business, politics and education
CO₂ removal is more topical and urgent than ever. In order to use CO₂ removal methods as quickly and sensibly as possible, the dialog between science and society is central. As part of the “CDR Dialog 2023”, the BMBF research program CDRterra presented its scientific expertise to actors within science, industry, politics and education and brought them together to put the topic of “Carbon Dioxide Removal” on the societal and (educational) political agenda.

The CDR Dialog 2023 took place from October 10 to 12 at the Deutsches Museum in Munich. It kicked off with a joint introductory event, followed by two workshops and a conference, each with its own focus:
- CDR Education Conference: Integrating CO₂ Removal into the Classroom
- CDR Stakeholder Workshop: Possible Carbon Dioxide Removal (CDR) Pathways in Germany
- CDR Science Workshop: Developing a comprehensive assessment framework for CDR methods in Germany
Ceremonial opening of the CDR Dialog 2023
The CDR Dialogue 2023 was opened by high-profile representatives from science and politics at the Deutsches Museum in Munich.
The CDR-education conference
The first nationwide educational conference from October 10 to 11 on CDR was for teachers, university didacticians, researchers and decision-makers in the field of education. Its motto was: “Developing perspectives, testing learning and teaching formats, designing lessons.” Together, they discussed how to make such a complex and controversial topic an integral part of school education. (Conference language was German)
The “CDR Stakeholder Workshop”
At the “CDR Stakeholder Workshop” from October 10 to 11, CDRterra researchers worked together with stakeholders from business, politics and society to examine possible CDR pathways in Germany from different perspectives. What are the advantages and disadvantages from the respective stakeholders’ perspective, and what should be taken into account when evaluating CDR methods? (Workshop language was German)
The “CDR Science Workshop”
The results of these dialogs were then being discussed during the “CDR Science Workshop” from October 11 to 12, where CDRterra researchers worked on the further development of a comprehensive assessment framework for CO₂ removal methods and portfolios in Germany. This should serve as a knowledge base on which a meaningful mix of CDR methods for Germany in the future can be developed. (Workshop language was English)
CDRterra at “Wissenschaft für Jedermann”
In the hybrid show “Wissenschaft für Jedermann” at the Deutsches Museum, CDRterra researchers presented the topic of CO₂ removal to a wide audience on October 11, 2023. The recording is available on YouTube (in german)
CDRterra special exhibition at the Deutsches Museum
At the special exhibition consortia from our research program presented various CDR methods. With the help of experiments Dr. Sally Soria-Dengg of the CDRterra School program conveyed knowledge about CO₂ removal in a fun way.
