Fairness is essential if political decisions are to be supported by everyone in the long term. How can policymakers get CO2 removal off the ground in a fair and sustainable way? The new CDRterra Policy Brief provides guidelines for those responsible in politics, business and civil society.

In order to achieve the net-zero target, large-scale CO₂ removal is needed in addition to drastic emission reductions. However, establishing the corresponding structures is a social challenge. In the new policy brief, the researchers from the CDRterra consortium CDR-PoEt emphasize that clear political conditions, reliable financing concepts and high transparency standards (e.g. with regard to monitoring, reporting and verification – MRV) are essential.

While some countries have already implemented policies for the realization of various CDR methods, Germany is still in the strategic planning phase. The researchers emphasize that a long-term infrastructure must be established – similar to wastewater treatment. Broad social acceptance can only be ensured through fair cost distribution and high standards.
