What does MRV actually mean?

Quelle Christine Meyer/CDRterra
CDRterra-Policy Brief: MRV

Hardly any other term is used as often in the current scientific and political/social debate on methods for CO₂ removal as the abbreviation “MRV”. It stands for “Measurement/Monitoring, Reporting and Verification”.

However, it is not precisely defined which processes and measures are to be specifically measured, monitored, documented, reported and verified in the area of CO₂ removal. This is because the term MRV is used in different contexts and with different objectives. As a result, it is often unclear what scientists and other experts mean when they call for robust guidelines, standards and technologies for measuring, reporting and verifying CO₂ removals. In this policy brief, CDRterra researchers attempt to clarify.
